As a junior in 2011, James was named first team All Region after quarterbacking Wasatch High School to the Utah 3A state playoffs, where his team lost to the eventual state champions. For the season, James led Utah Region 10 in scoring, had 2,128 yards of total offense (1,861 yards passing and 267 yards rushing) and scored 27 touchdowns (22 touchdown passes and 5 rushing touchdowns). He also punted 36 times for a 40.5 yard average. As a sophomore in 2010, James quarterbacked Judge Memorial Catholic High School of Salt Lake City to the semifinals of the Utah 3A state championship playoffs before losing to the state champions. As a sophomore, James led Utah Region 11 in passing yards (1,438 yards), touchdown passes (14), and total offense (1,533 yards, 17 total touchdowns).
